The UVALAL seeks to contribute to the research on language acquisition from the perspective of linguistic theory and comparative grammar. More specifically, the studies conducted by the UVALAL deal with the following issues:
- linguistic account of the acquisition of primary languages (monolingual, bilingual and heritage) and non-primary languages (L2 and L3), as well as the relationship between these different acquisition processes
- study of linguistic phenomena that emerge in language contact situations
- analysis of different linguistic issues related to bilingualism and bilingual acquisition: code-switching, natural translation, acquisition of lexical and functional categories, etc.
